Mold - What Is It?

Mold is a type of fungus that grows on a number of types of moisture or deceased organic material. Much like bacteria, mold eats and digests this organic material and reproduces by spawning airborne spores that can travel for quite some distance despite their small size. Mold digests organic material by using their digestive systems to secrete enzymes that break down organic material. Unfortunately for other lifeforms, this digestion process can and often will release toxic byproducts into the air. Research has shown that there are over a hundred species of mold that are toxic to humans, releasing a number of toxins detrimental to human health.

Problems Caused by Mold

Mold can cause a number of structural and health issues. Some mold species have even been found to contain dangerous carcinogens. Some of the possible problems mold can cause include:

  • A threat to existing efforts to remove mold from drywall, wood and furniture
  • Overall structural stains
  • Unattractive stains and noticeable spotting
  • Allergies triggered, as well as swollen throats, eyes, noses and skin
  • Lung problems, including infections and difficulty breathing
  • Sleepiness and flu-like symptoms
  • Headaches, diarrhea and rashes
  • Dermatitis
  • Creation of an environment where rodents, roaches, dust mites and bacteria can thrive

Mold Removal

Though mold has a number of extremely negative connotations surrounding it, mold spores are actually all around us and play an essential role in maintaining the environment. However, when mold spores bloom, the resulting mold should be removed immediately. When left unchecked, blooming mold can cause serious health and structural related issues and problems.
